Carson’s Killers: Here We Go

Posted March 14th, 2008 at 7:45 AM by Jeff Taylor
Suddenly our status quo media has discovered North Carolina’s revolving door prison system. That our urban counties take absolutely no interest in keeping track of violent offenders who are placed on probation by indifferent, overwhelmed judges.Of course Eve Carson’s accused killers were out on probation. That is the way the system works. Repeat offenders are rubber stamped through the system until someone winds up dead. This comes as no news to readers of Meck Deck, of Crime in Charlotte, of Tara Servatius, of The Rhino Times.

The Uptown paper of record knows it has been scooped on this topic and will be scooped indefinitely. There is simply no institutional interest in pursuing this story — reporters know it, so it does not happen. Enjoy the 12-part series on poultry processing plants, then smugly going on WFAE to brag about how much money you spent doing it. Dopes.

EVE CARSON SLAVE HEIRESS?eve_demario_lawrence_stack.jpg

Here’s another thing, let’s get the language right because it is time to stop speaking in circles. First, suspect Demario James Atwater absolutely is a repeat violent offender. I heard WBTV’s Paul Cameron, a straight-shooter, describe him as otherwise the other night. Not true.

Felony breaking and entering is a violent offense in my book. Using violence to obtain property is a violent offense. I’d also say that possession of a firearm by a felon is a license to strong-arm robbery, if not out-and-out armed robbery where the definition of “brandishing” weapon turns on a victim’s memory and a prosecutor’s caseload.

Second, this was not a random crime. Eve Carson was targeted due to her race, sex, age, and lifestyle. It is simply fantasy to pretend otherwise.

The status quo will never get to those topics.

March 14th, 2008 at 9:02 am If you’re on probation and you commit a crime, your ass goes to jail. That’s how probation is supposed to work. From here on out, any judge who gives probation to someone who’s already on probation should be removed from his or her bench permanently. Many of the murder victims here in Charlotte, as well as in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and other cities and towns all over this state, were killed by criminals who were repeatedly sentenced to probation by lazy, criminally-negligent, seemingly-afraid-to-do-their-job judges who, in my opinion, are clearly unqualified to be in their positions and who are partially responsible for those murders. You cut the guy loose and he killed someone; that person would still be alive if you’d done your job. What I want to hear about now is judges who ask “Is the defendant already serving probation?” and, when the answer is in the affirmative, reply with “Fine. Now he’s going to jail for the crime he already committed AND this new one. And I want it noted in his criminal record that he’s an habitual offender and should never be given probation again.”

March 14th, 2008 at 9:29 am Here’s my brilliant proposal — and you legal eagles can flesh it out –The Citizenship Deductible — We need to fess up and admit the State cannot — or will not — protect us from petty criminals. As a result, the State henceforth will not attempt to prosecute or apprehend suspects in involved in thefts or robberies resulting in losses of approximately $1000 or less.Instead, property owners will have the duty and responsibility to protect their own property. To that end, the charge of homicide will not be applied to any property owner using deadly force to protect OR recover their property valued over $1 up to approximately $1000.Over $1000, the citizen will be eligible for a badge and being duly deputized. Over $10,000 they will be eligible to replace any member of the General Assembly currently serving from the citizen’s district, provided that member themselves had not also recovered $10,000 or more in private property from criminals. Over $100,000, the citizen will be eligible to finish the current term of governor.

March 14th, 2008 at 11:16 am Doesn’t a violent crime mean you commit violence against another individual? Breaking and entering just doesn’t seem like a violent crime. Nor does having a fire arm while you are on probation.I’m not sure some conservatives won’t be happy until the U.S. resorts to a soviet style police state to fight crime.

March 14th, 2008 at 12:26 pm It shouldn’t matter what type of crime they commit while on probation… they should go to jail and serve a sentence. Probation is a freebie in NC… it means nothing. I’d say 3/4 of the arrested thugs I post on my website are on probation, electronic monitoring, etc. No doubt, if probation were enforced in NC, we would see less crime because the repeat offenders would be jailed on probation violations.

March 14th, 2008 at 2:01 pm From the news and record:“From the bench, Brown chided the media, saying they were focusing on the case because one of the victims was a young, white woman. Black crime victims, he said, don’t get nearly as much attention.”Ain’t that the truth. The kid who murdered Eve Carson was 17 years old. What in his life turned him into this monster? This kid isn’t an aberration. It happens every day, young black men killing mostly each other. Rarely does the violence make it outside the ‘hood. These people aren’t born with a “thug” gene. They are nurtured into thugs. Seems like it would make more sense to go after the source of the problem instead of continually plugging holes until another one pops open.I would start by legalizing drugs. And no, I’m not kidding.

March 14th, 2008 at 3:15 pm Yes, Howie, I want us to have Soviet-style justice here in the US. [rolls eyes]What I really want is this:1. If you commit a non-violent property crime, you can either go to jail OR you can get probation if it can be shown to the judge that this was a one-off event and you’ve learned your lesson…2. … unless you’re already on probation or parole, in which case you don’t get another bite at the probation apple: You’re going to jail.3. Crimes against a person (assault, rape, murder, etc.) should NEVER be punished with probation. There should be a jail term of at least a certain length, followed by early parole if they’ve been a well-behaved inmate. When people learn that “if you do the crime, you will do the time” has meaning, perhaps they will commit less crimes. This may not reduce the number of criminals, per se, but it will reduce the total number of crimes the criminals have the opportunity to commit. And if kids are being nurtured into thugs, all the more reason we should remove them from the streets. If you want to try to change things to discourage people from becoming criminals, great; but the ones who do commit crimes need to be locked up for the protection of the rest of us.

Right now, though, all these young punks are learning is that you can do pretty much whatever you want and there are no real consequences. That needs to end.

  8. Howie Says:
March 14th, 2008 at 4:17 pm Clay, I agree with everything you just said. By no means am I saying we shouldn’t arrest those who commit crimes. And I totally agree that there are way too many people who commit violent crimes who are walking the streets. The time served for commiting a violent crime should be substantial. No arguements there. In a way it goes back to legalizing drugs: our prisons are filled with people either using or selling drugs who spend a hell of a lot more time behind bars than many violent offenders. Get the drug offenders out of prison and maybe there would be room for violent criminals. The U.S. already has the highest precentage of prisoners in the world. Why? Because we think by keeping pot smokers behind bars we’re actually winning the “war” drugs.By the way, which lobbiests put the most pressure on Gov to maintain stupid drug laws? The lobbiests who represent prison unions. Go figure.

March 14th, 2008 at 9:37 pm What in his life turned him into this monster? This kid isn’t an aberration. It happens every day, young black men killing mostly each other. Some of the details emerging about the Lovette kid are that he was adopted by a solidly middle-class couple, but the adoptive father died a few years ago, after which, the kid started to tailspin. Whatever. To be honest, I really don’t care. But, more broadly, the problem is that absolutely nothing is actually expected of the black underclass by broader society, and this is particularly true of underclass males. No one really expects them to take school seriously, obey their mothers (or whoever got stuck raising them – fathers are practically an afterthought), obey the law, be monogamous, marry any of the mothers of their children, make any significant contribution towards the raising of such children, or hold a steady job. With the arrival of cheap immigrant labor over the past decade, they’re essentially superfluous. Well, except for being sperm donors to the women stupid enough to bear their progeny. The problem isn’t “poverty” (at least of any material sort) and it’s not discrimination. When both of those were a lot worse for blacks prior to the 1960s, they didn’t regularly produce adolescent sociopaths like these two.And none of this will change significantly until we begin making social policy that draws intelligent distinctions between the poor who are deserving of help (such as the elderly or disabled) and those who aren’t (such as these two able-bodied miscreants). The question isn’t how much does food stamps or Section 8 housing cost on the budget; it’s how much is it going to cost 15 years down the road when you’ve created a class of people who have none of the habits and mores necessary for self-sufficiency.The problem is that no one is willing to address it. The left likes it just the way it is and the right’s afraid of the political consequences of trying (not that the GOP wouldn’t find a way to screw it up in any event).

March 14th, 2008 at 10:31 pm What turns them into thugs? Good question. It’s one to which I suspect there is no single answer that can be applied in such a way as to allow a remeidal program to actually be expected to have an impact. For example, there’s a strong independent correlation between youthful violent criminal activity and illegitimate birth with no father in the home. But clearly that isn’t ALWAYS the case, and even if it were there really is no reasonable governmental approach to that with a prayer of being politically viable. There’s a much less strong correlation between poverty and crime, as well as incomplete education and crime, but in all of those things the correlation becomes almost insignificant the illegitimate birth, no fahter in the home kids are removed from the equation. That doesn’t realistically leave much room for remediation.

March 15th, 2008 at 1:09 am Eve Carson’s Family Owned SlavesEve Carson’s family may have owned slaves in Athens, Georgia. Plus, word on the streets is Eve was buying drugs and playing Privileged White Flaunt – where privileged whites drive through underprivileged black neighborhoods at dangerous hours to tease poor blacks with their possessions.

March 15th, 2008 at 1:27 am Please tell me those two links are satirical in nature.Because if they’re not, anyone who believes even one iota that she deserved what happened to her because of what her family might have done 150 years ago or what she might have done back in her hometown seriously needs to be taken out and beaten unconscious. I am not kidding.
  14. jixjacousins Says:
March 15th, 2008 at 1:48 am The more disturbing thing than the probability of her family owning slave, is her going out and playing this sick game affluent whites play to mock impoverished blacks. If she was playing the Privileged White Flaunt or whatever, she deserved what she got. Too, if her family owned slaves and didn’t pay their reparations. If so (on the reparations) her Highlander actually belonged to Atwater and Lovett. That’s if she wasn’t seeking something more from them.

  16. clayj Says:
March 15th, 2008 at 1:59 am And just to be clear here: What is revolting is that you would somehow think it’s valid that a college student should deserve to be MURDERED because of something her family might have done back in the 1800s, or because of some tasteless game she might have played back in her hometown. Her murder is ABSOLUTELY INEXCUSABLE, and for you to suggest otherwise demonstrates that you are truly an awful human being. Please take your hatemongering somewhere else. (Jeff, let me know if I’ve stepped over a line here. But right now this “jixjacousins” creature has pissed me off more than anyone has in a very, very long time.)
  17. jixjacousins Says:
March 15th, 2008 at 2:10 am No, Clay, HER BEHAVIOR IS WHAT IS INEXCUSABLE! To purposely drive around through impoverished areas where blacks live to FLAUNT your race and privilege (privilege that was acquired from the African American Slave Trade) THAT IS INEXCUSABLE! Why didn’t her family disclose they owned slaves before she was killed?

  1. Wait, if the Highlander was part of the reparations to the one slave owned by Carson’s alleged ancestor, how does it belong to Atwater and Lovett?

Just because they’re African-American? In that case I’m going to go gobble up 40 acres from across the state and steal someone’s mule… heck it belongs to me doesn’t it? Because I was physically enslaved by the white man? Because I was beaten and shackled?

Atwater and Lovett were nothing but two common thugs and don’t even deserve to be welcomed into our beautiful Afro culture. Nothing belonged to them, and this lovely young girl did nothing to deserve their vile actions.

  2. Privileged White Flaunt ? Blacks are certainly the worlds eternal children. Imagine the audacity of Whites to not drive around in a rusty old Cadillac so infantile welfare blacks don’t get offended! Thug=child.

  3. Clarence,

Brakes homeboy. Atwater and Lovett are part of the black culture whether you want them to be or not. Who are you? Check yourself.
